Several months ago we asked you Malaysians to fill out a survey about the state of our local concert industry, seek opinions and thoughts on what you liked/disliked about the situation, our promoters and bands you’d like to see amongst others. We have compiled and summarized the information since and these are the interesting portions we’d like to share with you:
- The average concert goer attends a minimum of 3 shows per year, mainly by international artists.
- Majority of you stated you are most likely to spend RM200 maximum on concert tickets. However, the figure is subject to increase under various circumstances (e.g. favourite band, quality act, etc).
- Favourite concert attended by many were Muse and Panic At The Disco, although they came with several complaints at the same time such as poor floor management and lack of promotion/mediocre ticket sales respectively.
- How did our local promoters do? Everyone’s favourite seemed to be Arianna Event Management and Galaxy Group (tied), followed closely by Pineapple Concerts and Absolute Entertainment. Behind them were One Armed, Artist World, Soundscape Records, Utarid Booking, Carbon Eight and local labels/promoters Intrude Records, Theatrical Records, Dyslexia Records.
- It was a bit of a mix between what most people liked, disliked and felt neutral about our local promoters. Several had no comments and there were those that felt everything thus far has been good. Gig goers are/were generally unhappy with the way the Panic At The Disco concert was handled (same reasons as mentioned earlier – poor promotion, last minute ticket sales etc), the existence of VIP seating that doesn’t make it fair for everyone and the inability to change concert tickets (from a cheaper to a more expensive one no less). Other concerns voiced were rude personnel when fans inquire about artists’ arrivals, lack of expertise/manpower to handle and coordinate large crowds as well as artist/sponsor affiliation that may pose a conflict of interest.
- Most people tend to try and obtain M&Gs via concert promoters.
- Promoters you that best fit the criteria listed according to your preferences:
Customer Service: Galaxy Group
Portfolio/Artist Mix & Selection: Pineapple Concerts
Professionalism: Galaxy Group
Responds to customers’ feedback & input: Galaxy Group
- Likes about our promoters: Meet and greets, ability to stage gigs and perseverance in putting up with all the red tape.
Dislikes about our promoters: Lack of promotion and contests, poor customer base research (resulting in highly priced tickets etc), VIP seating, lack of experimental approach, bringing the same bands/artists over & afraid to bring new ones in, missing out on bands touring the region.
- We asked you which top 3 bands you’d like to see perform in KL and the majority mentioned Fall Out Boy & The Academy Is… Not far behind were Cobra Starship, Avenged Sevenfold, All Time Low, Paramore and Forever The Sickest Kids. Others that didn’t quite make it but were mentioned nonetheless include Brand New, Oasis, Cardigans, Weezer, Ash, Saosin, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Jack’s Mannequin amongst others.
And there you have it. We thank you for participating in our survey and if you would still like to fill it out (for those that have yet to do so), you are more than welcome to by all means. It was interesting to read what you had to say and we hope it has provided both parties, fans and organizers alike opportunities to seize.
