PARKWAY DRIVE So Parkway Drive came, rocked KL and left last February. 2/3rds of the crew were there to witness the band live in action that Sunday evening and it definitely was a gig to remember. Be glad you either were or weren’t at MCPA that weekend. At approximately 7.30pm, the band took the stage and that’s when the mayhem began as they performed to the anticipating crowd. The hall, roughly the size of two large classrooms merged was literally packed to the brim and bore an intense level of humidity with many struggling to get a breath of fresh air (hence the numerous in and outs people were making between bands/songs). That however, certainly didn’t deter anyone from having a good time and it was just a small price to pay in the name of a good old fashioned rock show, moshing included (as per band’s request). With this being their very first appearance in Malaysia, one might be under the impression to rightfully assume that not many would know of who the Byron Bay outfit Parkway Drive were but that couldn’t be a more inaccurate assumption. Those present were certainly not unfamiliar with their music let alone the band, what with the Internet at our disposal. To further prove our point, the show was a roaring success and had completely sold out – all of this primarily the result of the most valuable marketing tool of word of mouth without any major press coverage and airplay. We were left impressed, to say the least! Witnessing the audience echo the lyrics sung by vocalist Winston McCall’s and singing along like the long time fans they are was a sight to behold like any other gig where you get the chills or a sense of pride in being one of those people. Or both. Fist pumping and full of gusto, the crowd were certainly connecting with the band’s music with such intensity, a constant reminder of why concerts are unique as they can ever be. It’s never just about the band on stage and the fans but the general atmosphere that can never be replicated elsewhere, those “in the moments” that conjure the different emotions attached to the songs. Granted, with an early bus to catch the following day we didn’t manage to stick around for the band’s entire set but what we saw and experienced in the time that we did definitely left a lasting impression. One thing’s for sure, Parkway Drive certainly weren’t the first and neither will they be the last band to claim that “this is the hottest show we’ve ever played“! © More Than Good Hooks |
