History Of More Than Good Hooks

More Than Good Hooks was the result of 3 Malaysian individuals who shared similar interests in music. Going back, we met online sometime in mid 2004 on the Simple Plan Invasion Crew message board and although the SPIC underwent changes in the subsequent years, we kept in contact outside of the forum.

Aside from the obvious love for concerts, we soon came to realize that both of us felt the same way towards our local promoters concerning matters pertaining to international bands’ gigs in Malaysia, what with their lack of customer interaction (although it’s gradually improving), amongst other things. It was incredibly frustrating to just remain by the sidelines and watch as organizers from neighbouring countries continued to soar ahead of the game and expand their ever increasing and impressive repertoires while we kept missing out. This provoked us to want to change the situation to the best of our ability, however great or little it may be. But how, we thought.

In the last days of December 2007, the subject was brought up between Maya & SJ in an MSN convo and the idea of creating a music site was spawned. It has been a dream of ours to do something similar all along but the opportunity never came – until now. We knew from the get go that we had no in depth knowledge or background in what we were about to embark on, aside from what we’ve picked up from viewing other sites that have given us the inspiration to do so. Nonetheless, we were adamant on giving it a try, as long as we are able to get our intentions across.

When it came to deciding the name of the site, several ideas were thrown about by the both of us but the majority were already taken, used or had an inactive [and expensive] domain. Looks like we weren’t original enough, eh? A couple of polls containing the few names we liked were run by some friends for input and we finally settled on More Than Good Hooks, your lyrical drug fix. The name More Than Good Hooks was sourced from Panic At The Disco’s song “London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines” which we felt was apt and in line with what we were doing.

The site was worked on offline for the next 5 months or so, as we came up with ideas and attempted to plan ahead of time. During that time, Aliya (also a fellow SPIC-er and a friend of Maya’s) joined us on board as the resident writer and photographer, completing the current team you see today. Mazz freelances as our graphic designer and is involved in the aesthetics of the site whenever possible.

Since its inception, More Than Good Hooks has consistently been quick to inform concert goers from the region on various bands’ shows in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines. Time and time again we have proven to be a reliable source of information (primarily) on international bands’ tour dates in South East Asia and hope to continue doing so whilst expanding the site.
